So, what exactly is the start-up visa program?
This program was introduced by IRCC, with the support of the Government of Canada. Its aim is to identify aspiring foreign entrepreneurs who present the skills and potential to build innovative businesses in order to launch their start-up business in Canada; while simultaneously gaining permanent residency with the support of an approved Canadian designated organization. There are a set of requirements that must be fulfilled in order to be accepted into the program. The approved designated organizations listed under the Government of Canada include select venture capital funds, angel investor groups, and business incubators. These designated organizations are permitted to provide a “Letter of Support” to the foreign entrepreneurs with regard to the onset of their immigration process. What is the difference between these organizations?
The main distinguishing components between each organization are the level of support and commitment provided, which includes the degree of engagement, attentiveness, and resources available to the applicant, which ultimately provides the strength and the level of financial commitment on the “Letter of Support”. For instance, a business incubator simply provides the basics to guide the Startup, an angel investor must invest a minimum of $75,000 while a Venture Capital must invest a minimum of $200,000!
Amongst the three types of organizations, a business incubator runs programs to help the “survival stage” of a Startup, and will not provide any financial support. However, they can provide some initial resources, such as space and initial mentoring to help the Startup ready for future angel investments. Angel investors are primarily silent stakeholders there to offer early financial support but don’t offer resources beyond their capital commitment. Venture Capitals have the greatest stake and equity commitment , therefore look for strong products or services that hold a strong advantage over their competitors, with a talented management team and a wide potential market to really establish the business primed for growth.
