People ask, “Why dentistry?” My reply is always the same, “my father”. My father was not only a great dentist, but an amazing role model. To me, he was so much more than ‘dad’; he was my mentor-a passionate and intelligent dentist who shaped the person I am today. Sadly, I lost him to cancer while completing my first year of dental school and, in an instant, I lost a parent, and the dream of practicing with him, becoming his equal, and learning and honing my craft alongside him. There were many times during the remainder of dental school that I had to push through the desire to quit because the smells and sounds of dentistry were a constant reminder of my loss and it was so bittersweet.

In processing life without him, the one thing I held tight to was his example of ‘never give up’ so I persevered through the emotional rollercoaster of grief and the obstacles of healing and growth. Today, I am at peace knowing he is with me in my career and proud of my personal and professional growth and accomplishments. Navigating my way through the financial hardships of a global pandemic, and continuing to expand my two dental practices against the odds, is a testament of what he taught me and his belief in me. What a comfort it is to me to feel his guidance and support as I continue forward to build ‘our’ legacy of people-centred leadership and service in the field of dentistry. Sometimes, when I pick up a hand piece, I can feel his presence with me–his smiling face, pat on the shoulder, and his words, “you made it!”
